Towner, James T.
Age 83, of Elmira, NY, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. He was born on October 9, 1940 in Elmira, NY to the late Francis and Shirley (Kiper) Towner. James was predeceased by his brother, Donald Towner and sister, Joanne Rich. He is survived by his wife, Joan Towner of Elmira; son, Thomas (Cathy) Towner of Mrytle Beach, SC; daughters, Deborah (Bruce Cornell) Towner of Elmira and Michelle (Michael Jr.) Slaven of Horseheads; sisters-in-law, Judy (John) Ference, Mary Jean (George) Williams, Patty (George) McCarrison and Josie Ammon; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews and bonus children, Nancy Burris-Burns and William Hackett. James was a veteran of the US Army and retired from Hardinge after 43 years of service. He spent most of his life coaching many kids at the Elmira Bowling Center as well as Baseball with the Mark Twain Little League and he was also a Boy Scout Leader for many years. James was an advocate, supporter, treasurer and part of the field maintenance crew at Dunn Field. Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, February 18th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow there at 4 p.m. with Pastor Justin Coffin officiating. The family would like to thank the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the compassionate care given to James.
