Patricia G. Johnson

January 18 1931 ~ January 09 2025

Obituary:

Proverbs 31:31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring praise at the city gates. Patricia "Pat" Johnson, 93, of Newark Valley, formerly of Elmira, NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in the beautiful sanctuary of her home, on Thursday, January 9, 2025, following a brief illness. Pat was born on January 18, 1931, in Waverly, NY, an identical twin daughter to Wilmot Martin and Mary "Edith" Young (Wright). Pat is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Jon Sheldon of Hudson, Florida; her grandchildren, Jackie (Johnson) and Glenn "Carey" Morgan of Newark Valley, NY; Christopher Butler of Elmira Heights, NY; Christy (Sheldon) and Jared Kennedy of Elmira, NY; Rob and Tawni (Bates) Sheldon of San Marcos, Texas. Her great-grandchildren, Jessica, Kiefer, Ella and Nolan; Her great-great-grandchildren, Killian and Ronan. Additionally, Pat is survived by another daughter Linda Sturch, of Elmira NY. Pat was predeceased by her twin sister Evelyn Contento, brothers Paul, Reuben and Stanley Young. Her grand-dogs Josey, Token, grand-cat Romeo, and her sweetest cat, Lily. Pat was known for her kindness, generosity, and strong work ethic, and she dedicated herself to the personal care and well-being of others. In 1999, Pat was named and received the Chemung County’s Outstanding Mature Worker Award. Her hands were never idle, and her heart was always open, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her. Pat's passion for caring for others not only gave her immense knowledge and experience but also fostered lasting work relationships that turned into forever friendships. She set the bar high with her first-class approach to over 60 years of patient care, beginning at the Breesport Home in the late 60’s to gleaming with pride in her work as a physical therapy aide in the Physical Therapy Department, then a Certified Nurse Aid for the Chemung County Nursing Facility for over 40 years. After retirement she worked full-time for Blakemore West Adult Care Facility as a personal care aide, and because of her first-class care, she was called upon by many physicians in the community to give private care in her spare time. Pat’s love for animals was also a defining part of her gentle nature; she especially adored cats and took in strays, but her favorite was her adopted cat, Lily. She also loved music, watching polka on Saturday nights, cooking, gardening, planting flowers, and feeding the hummingbirds. Pat also loved staying connected with her family and friends by sending cards of wisdom and strength, or just a simple hello. At age 93, she even learned to ask “Alexa” or “Google” it. She made many new friends over the years and was given the nickname, “G” and “G-Pat.” She loved sharing a cocktail on the patio and talking about current world events and sharing stories from so long ago. Pat gave to others selflessly and endlessly. As the matriarch of our family, she always made sure her family was cared for, and it gave her immense gratification knowing she could. Her family was everything to her, and she enjoyed the last decade, spending time with those who loved her unconditionally. Our beautiful soul, thank you for giving us life and love. Everything we do, we will do it with love and grace, just as you taught us. Thank you, thank you, thank GOD for you, the wind beneath our wings. Respectfully, there will be no funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be had in Patricia’s honor, at the decision of her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local animal shelter, or offer a simple act of kindness, in her memory.
