Karen Anne Ruth
July 22nd, 1963 - October 17th, 2024
Karen Anne Ruth peacefully entered her heavenly home on October 17th, 2024, surrounded by her loving children. After a courageous four-year battle with pancreatic cancer, she faced her illness with remarkable strength and grace. Her unwavering spirit and the love of her family provided her comfort during her journey. Though her fight has ended, the love and memories she created will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Karen’s legacy of kindness, faith, and resilience will continue to inspire her family and friends as they honor her life and the profound impact she made on everyone around her. Karen was predeceased by her beloved parents, Donald and Mary Ruth, as well as her brother, David Ruth. She is lovingly remembered by her six children: Julie (Cubby) Proctor, Lindsay (Justin) Spallone, Maureen (Elijah Horton) Scheepsma, John Scheepsma Jr., Mallary Scheepsma, and Logan Scheepsma. As a devoted Nanna, she cherished her six grandchildren—Alexis Rice (Kace), Caylin Proctor, Alanna Pittman, Riley Proctor, Caleb Marshall, and Joseph Spallone—and took great joy in her role as a great Nanna to Giovonni and Camila. Karen was also a loving sister and best friend to Rosemary (Scott) Bennett and Kathleen Thomas, along with two brothers, Michael and Richard Ruth. Her family and friends will forever hold her memory close, celebrating the love and joy she brought into their lives. Karen had a beautiful spirit that radiated warmth and compassion, making a lasting positive impact on everyone around her. Her loving nature was complemented by a strong faith, which guided her in dedicating her life to helping others. After a fulfilling career as a committed employee at Beecher Elementary School, Chemung County, and Cornell Cooperative Extension, she found her true calling as a substance abuse counselor. This role allowed her to support individuals on their journeys to recovery, reflecting her deep commitment to the well-being of others. Karen was also a proud graduate with multiple certifications from Elmira College, Cornell University, and Tompkins Community College, showcasing her dedication to education and personal growth. Her legacy of service and love will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. Anyone who knew Karen recognized her immense love for her children and grandchildren, but that was just one part of her vibrant spirit. She found joy in the beach, baking, cooking, shopping, and thrifting, each activity reflecting her generous heart and zest for life. Her warmth lit up any room, creating an atmosphere of love and joy. Above all, her children will remember her for her selfless spirit—always giving back to those in need and making the holidays magical for her family. A devoted follower of Jesus, she lived her faith until she was called home. Now, her children carry her legacy in their hearts, knowing they have a guardian angel watching over them, guiding them through life's challenges with the love and strength she instilled in them. Her family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to CareFirst Hospice, particularly to the dedicated employees Beth and Dianne. Their compassionate support and guidance during this difficult time made a profound difference, providing comfort and care when it was needed most. The family truly appreciates the kindness and professionalism shown by the CareFirst team, which helped them navigate the challenges of this journey with greater ease. Their commitment to ensuring Karen’s dignity and peace in her final days will always be remembered and cherished by her loved ones. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, October 22nd from 4 to 6 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church with Father Richard Farrell as celebrant.
